Hylte, Sweden's most southerly wilderness

A sample glimpse of Hylte's special places
Here in Hylte we have a long history of welcoming visitors and travellers to Sweden’s most southerly wilderness.
The old Nissastigen is one of the oldest roads in southern Sweden, it has been busy for hundreds of years, during ancient conflicts the Danish and Swedish armies marched back and forth, the post carriages changed horses, gentry, royalty, priests and others travelled through our region, all of this traffic seems to have spread the seeds of the wealth of wildflowers we now enjoy, herb rich meadows, cut by scythe each summer. A tradition of generous hospitality also built up over the years and we look forward to welcoming you to our special place.

We live in harmony with our abundant wildlife, sometimes Ospreys come to take titbits, moose and deer amble through the forests and wild-boar can sometimes be glimpsed through the elegant spruce, birch and pine trunks. There are eight nature reserves in and around Hylte and if you are very lucky you may even spot a lynx. Our wooden houses, traditionally painted red ochre and white, nestle in amongst the trees creating views unchanged for centuries.

  • Eels and many varieties of fish thrive in our lakes. You can enjoy excellent fishing for pike, pikeperch, perch, roach among others and there are feasts to be had at restaurants, inns and cafes where the local produce tastes divine!
  • Midsummer-festivals, a Swedish folklore tradition from the times of the Vikings are held on 23rd and 24th of June all around Sweden.  At this time we enjoy fresh new potatoes, boiled with dill, served with herring and salmon, with sour cream and chopped chives, washed down with spicy schnapps and beer!  At other times and many other Swedish events we eat our delicious Smörgåsbord.
  • "Bolmen-day" events are held on the last Saturday of July in small places all around the magnificent Lake Bolmen. Markets and activities: rowing-competitions, boat rides, local food, crafts and sometimes outdoor sauna-tubs, are set up around the Lake Bolmen.
  • Our area has some famous historical characters who can teach us much today; one, Elias Fries (1794-1878), a learned gentleman who developed a system to categorise fungi and lichen, just like his fellow Swede Linneaus had done for vascular plants.
  • Nowhere seems to have been so well documented from a botanical point of view as the picturesque village of Femsjo. You can walk through the peaceful forests and discover today’s fungi. You can learn more about Elias Fries in the tiny museum in Femsjo, beside the historic fortified Church with its stunning painted ceiling.
  • Legendary warrior Ebbe Skammelson is another famous character, who after a shocking deed, repented on each of the 365 islands on Lake Bolmen. Seek out his story and even follow in his wake and discover the islands for yourself!

  • There are walks through forests and by lakes, explore water mills and other historic sites.
  • There are horse riding trails along the quiet and dappled forest trails (and bike trails too!).
  • Admire arts and crafts galore, including the ancient decorative wall hangings ‘Bonads’ to be seen at the Bonads museum.
  • Visit the amazing round house and see the mighty steam trains within.
  • Attractive and distinctive accommodation can be found, in Bed and Breakfasts, Inns and forest cabins.
  • Learn to fish, to be a botanist, to paint a bonad, to be still in the silence of the forest.
