The Tale of the BESST Lectern

The BESST lectern is a symbol of international collaboration between businesses and local authorities in three areas.

Plans for the lectern began on the drawing board of Peak District furniture designer Ian Savile who is renowned for making unusual wooden music stands.
Ian said: “Craftspeople from the BESST areas are each making parts of the lecterns incorporating wood and metal local to the three areas.  We are using pine and iron from Fyresdal (Norway), with ash and pewter (which contains lead) from the Peak District (England), plus rowan and copper from Hylte (Sweden).”

Oivind Klausen, the village blacksmith from Fyresdal, has manufactured three iron bases for the lecterns.  Lennart Hjelmqvist, who makes helmets for the Royal Swedish Guard at home in Unnaryd, Hylte, is making the metal inscribed inlays.  The wooden elements will be made by Ian who will assemble all the contributions in May 2006.

Ian said: “The lecterns are long-lasting, unique and useful pieces of furniture that represent the partnerships created by the BESST project.  We hope they will be used by the three partner local authorities in their Council Chambers and that they will remind people of BESST’s philosophy and successes in years to come.”
